Psychoanalysis and Health Organisations
Health Institutions, like all institutions, do not only meet technical criteria and social objectives they have been established for, but also abide by, perhaps above all, a collective unconscious logic which appeases the distress experienced by the health workers. Being unconscious, it infiltrates into the organisation’s logic, without the workers recognizing it, and it produces a kind of organisation which is often helpful for the health workers but not for the patients. In this way, a paradox could arise: an education system being effective for the teachers rather than for the students, hospitals serving the doctors and nurses instead of the patients, the Army serving the generals and not defending the nation, or politics serving the politicians and not governing the country. Thus, dysfunctional institutions are created: in the health field repeated complaints of malfunctioning are expressed and lead to reforms upon reforms, each one being unsatisfactory.
Psychoanalysis could help analyse the hidden collective reasons, which obscurely move social-health institutions, in order to identify an effective organisation both for the staff and the patients.
