Construction of the Mind
Beginning with his comparative studies on the different psychoanalytic theories and the contribution of other sciences of mind, the author has progressively outlined his Theory of the Protomental. This has developed into a more general study on how the functional capacities observed in fetal and neonatal development are progressively constructed (see area 9).
At an early stage of life it is possible to detect how this development takes place as a result of a learning process modulated through the relationship with the caregiver. The unceasing, non-verbal, unconscious communication between mother and child is a dialogue which structures the mind of the baby in the best way as long as it develops as an effective exchange –with the mother having a good capacity for rêverie– rather than in a pseudo dialogue with negative effects. This relational modulation of all the learning processes continues, although less evident, for the whole life. The entire mental structure of the individual is constructed in this way. The mnestic traces of this ever-changing learning shape corresponding neural structures that constitute functional memory, mostly implicit. All the so-called affective functions and structures are important. In this way the brain learns how to function.
